Apparently, I should be reading wired science more often. I’m a little Kate to the game on this one too. Sharing in case you haven’t seen it. This is amazing stuff. We are on the edge of furthering our understanding of quantum physics to a useable point.

[…] although there are clearly reasons other than climate change—ocean acidification, energy security, extending the lifetime of finite resources—for promoting efficiency and green energy. This point is clearly lost on some.

Energy from incoming photons could simultaneously explore every possible chlorophyll route from a protein’s surface to the reaction center at its core, then settle on the shortest path. I know I’m a few months late on this one, but the consequences of this are amazing.

Our Complicated Relationship with Breasts -... →
This is one part of our (USA) culture I dislike, this Puritan weirdness about the human body. Get over it! It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It isn’t healthy to deny your feelings about something. Acknowledge them and move on. I say “our culture” because, as far as I know, most European countries don’t seem to have these issues.

Brigham And Women's Hospital - Press Releases →
Like surgery, this seems to attack one aspect of an unhealthy lifestyle. It could give people the false impression that they can eat whatever they want and not worry about their health. What about heart disease, cancer, etc? This isn’t attacking the problem at its source.

Does "Mastered for iTunes" matter to music? Ars... →
Apple’s guidelines recommend that engineers not apply heavy amounts of compression or needlessly boost audio levels to the absolute limits, though both practices have become commonly used in commercially produced music. Overuse of such tools has led to the infamous “loudness wars,” in which one record producer tries to make his records sound louder than another. The result is that some modern...

Confirmed: He Who Sits the Most Dies the Soonest -... →
Interesting stuff. This article made no mention of whether standing still for the same amount of time one would sit makes any difference or not. Could it just be the act of not moving? Or does standing actually solve the problem? Either way, I’ll be getting up and moving around more while thinking through problems.

Teachers — in K12 all the way through higher ed — have to change their roles the way reporters in journalism institutions do. It is more important to be facilitator to the hyper-informed community than it is to be the broad generalist who seeks to be the single conduit for information.

While there’s no need for widespread panic, the fact that this latest version of the malware can install itself without the user’s password is enough of a reason for concern that some precautions are necessary.
